These Elan freeride skis have a lot going for them, and the 106 Black is no exception. Built like the 96 Black but with a more powder-oriented personality, the Ripstick 106 is a high-performance, soft snow ski that has limitless possibilities. In terms of building design and technology, Elan has never been one to shy away from change and innovation. They're pretty much responsible for changing the shape of skiing with their SCX model years ago, and they haven't really slowed down much at all since then. They're gaining a lot of traction these days with their all-mountain and freeride skis, and the 106 Black is at the forefront of the conversation. Built with Elan's TNT technology, the skis start with a TubeLite wood core with tip to tail carbon tubes. These tubes add a ton of fore/aft strength, as the hollow tube shape is a lot stiffer than carbon stringers. This adds a ton of power and grip to the edge, so even for a 106 underfoot width, the skis can rail a turn. The swing weight is an important aspect of the ski, and Elan makes the ski nimbler by adding vapor tip inserts. By removing the core material and replacing it with lighter materials, the skis are easier to get from turn to turn without compromising stability. The Amphibio Profile gives you camber on the downhill edge and rocker on the uphill edge, leading to a super-smooth transition and floaty feeling. Extra carbon makes it stiffer than the normal 106.
